Viewpoint of Senhora do Monte

The Viewpoint of Senhora do Monte is the second highest viewpoint of Bairro Histórico da Graça¹.

It is located right on the northern hedge of Colina de Santo André², in São Vicente de Fora, opposite the Capela da Nossa Senhora do Monte³ from where two streets descend, the Calçada do Monte and Rua da Senhora do Monte⁴.

This space gets incredibly busy with tourists and photography admirers, as from here you can photograph one of the best panoramic views of Lisbon. In the Summer, the viewpoint is filled with chartered tuk-tuks, mostly by foreigners.

The setting offered by this place is not the only great thing about it. The large canopy of trees spaced and spread out between the garden benches, invites us to spend some time with ourselves, for “me” time, just contemplating. If you, however, are up for a different challenge, there are two tile paintings with the Lisbon map, where you can try to find all the visible locations from this viewpoint.

The top of the hill, also known as Monte São Gens⁵, belongs to the old slope of Vale de Arroios⁶, that separates this hill from Colina de Sant’Ana⁷. This valley is now known as Avenida Almirante de Reis⁸.

In highlight is the Praca Martim Moniz⁹ close to us. We can also sight the Colina de São Roque¹⁰ and the Viewpoint of São Pedro de Alcântara, Baixa Pombalina and Ponte 25 de Abril¹¹, Rio Tejo¹² and south riverside of Tejo all the way over Almada. We can see Castelo de Sao Jorge on the top of the Colina do Castelo¹³ immediately to our left and even closer the Convento da Graça¹⁴ and Viewpoint of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
