Viewpoint of Moinho do Penedo

We arrive to the south side of Serra de Monsanto¹ by Estrada do Penedo², parish of Ajuda, that leads us until the Viewpoint of Moinho do Penedo, also known as Viewpoint of Moinho do Alferes.

We leave the vehicle parked at the car park of Penedo near to the picnic park of Moinho do Penedo³ and follow up the tarmac trail by the slope until a glade where is found the windmill and a wide basketball field. We are at a quiet place, very broad, with a large balcony above the south part of Lisbon.

It is usual to see groups of friends playing on the field, fans of open air sports that come and go jogging through the hidden trails amidst the trees, we listen to the tinkling of pinions of cyclists that run all the sierra or even the domestic dogs bark brought by their owners until Alameda Keil do Amaral⁴, situated right in front of the viewpoint.

Those wishing to bring a snack, may sit at the round stone tables behind the old windmill, while enjoying the faraway panoramic of Parque Florestal de Monsanto⁵ descending until the Rio Tejo⁶. However, the treetops form a green mantle that hides the whole perspective over the city of Lisbon.

The windmill is part of an ancient windmill network of Serra de Monsanto¹ which provided flour to the population of Lisbon on the end of the 18^th century.

Despite the height of the sierra we only mange to sight the Tejo's corridor crossing Almada city towards Seixal city, the Ponte 25 de Abril and the Cristo Rei.

This viewpoint is an excellent spot to spend an open air evening in one of the highest points of Lisbon, with everything that nature has to offer.
