The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is found in the Sede e Museu da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and exhibits a precious art collection that was gathered lifelong by the Turkish businessman Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian.

But, before the museum there was the Man who made it possible and didn´t see his major dream being accomplished.

Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian

Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian was born in Üsküdar, Turkey, on . His love for the arts develops in Istanbul, a city full of history and an important trading post between Europe and Asia.

Skilled in finance, Gulbenkian managed to arise his fortune when negotiating the division of the oil company Turkish Petroleum Co., Ltd. by four big international corporations and granted a percentage for himself. After this, there were gathered all the conditions for the creation of what would become an unparalleled art collection with more than 6000 articles.

It was the year when Gulbenkian visits for the first time, city that would become his permanent residence.

On the , Gulbenkian dies at Lisbon, leaving behind a legacy with incredible value and his outmost personal desire to be fulfilled: to gather his art collection together in one place.
The whole collection of Calouste Gulbenkian arrived to the Portuguese capital in . Five years later, the art works would be in exhibition in the Palácio dos Marqueses de Pombal, situated in Oeiras.

In / the architects Alberto Pessoa, Pedro Cid e Ruy Jervis d'Athouguia the winning project of the context for the construction of the Sede e Museu da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.

Ten years later, in , the museum opens its doors to the general public.In this museum space one can find art works of the following the themes: Antique, Art of the Islamic Eastern, Armenian Art, Art of the Far East, Painting, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Art of the Book and René Lalique.
