Review

The Navy Museum (in portuguese, Museu de Marinha) was inaugurated due to an order of the King D. Luís I, of cognomen O Popular. Only two years after rising to the throne, the Portuguese monarch states the importance of gathering a collection that witnesses to future generations the legacy of the maritime deeds achieved by the country, opening the Navy Museum to the public for the first time on the .

After changing several times from a place to another, like the Palácio dos Condes de Farrobo between and , the Navy Museum is located in the north and west wings of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (distinguished as a national monument in the year and World Heritage of UNESCO in ). Facing the Tejo, where so many ships and caravels hoisted their sails for the first time to the winds, the museum's collection meets here its first and worthy home.

The collection of the Navy Museum impresses by assembling about 20.000 pieces from which 6.000 are in exhibition for the public. Besides the permanent exhibition, the museum dedicates the room D. Luís to show temporary exhibitions.

While visiting the Navy Museum one will be gifted with the statues of D. João II, D. Manuel and the Infante D. Henrique, a model of the ship Madre de Deus, an enormous world map and many other pieces that make magic the naval history of .
